11. A few updates, friends, & fun

Buenas tardes, amigos.  I write to you from one of my favorite rooms (yes, the office).  Tonight I'm jamming to Disney's "The Little Mermaid," album courtesy of Kelly Pippin- thanks, girl!  What a neat surprise.

Well, last Thursday June 7th I met my Plastic surgeon for our first appointment.  He explained that the procedure will occur 3-4 weeks after chemotherapy is complete (late November/early December), and he will insert tissue expanders directly after the double mastectomy.  These expanders are temporary but will allow air to slowly stretch the skin in preparation for implants since all of my own breast tissue will be removed.  After the 6 weeks of radiation and healing I'll have a second operation where the expanders will be removed and silicon implants inserted.

Shortly after the discussion with Plastic surgery, the Genetics appointment was moved up from July to that same Thursday.  We made an entire pedigree of my family tree which extended to my great grandparents!  Thankfully one of my aunts helped out with those details.  On Monday 6/18 I'll return to have lab work drawn to test for common breast cancer causing genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2.

After the myriad of appointments, I had some fun with friends!  We enjoyed crawfish at the annual Internal Medicine chief send off, and I had a chance to catch up with the Pediatrics crew as well (pictured below).

Medifee.com chemoport for chest For the first two chemo cycles I opted to have access through a peripheral IV vs a chemoport.  A chemoport is a device that allows accessible withdrawal of blood for labs and a site to inject medications and fluids.  It is surgically inserted into one of the larger veins close to the upper portion of your chest while a catheter extends close to the heart.  One of the most common post-surgical complications is infection around the site, and I wanted to lessen my chances of infection.  Well, after the Adriamycin left hives and bruising for the second time close to the area where the chemo was injected, I said "enough is enough.  I'll take a chemoport, please." 29. Chemo cycle #5

Tuesday September 18th I underwent my fifth treatment of chemo.  The therapy was Taxol (paclitaxel) this time (no more of that awful Adriamycin and Cytoxan).  Although there was no nausea or vomiting following the Taxol, there was A LOT more muscle and bone pain, particularly in my neck.  This is also my shameless plug to please get your flu vaccine this season because that is what the side effects of this treatment felt like- a really aggressive case of the flu.  I have a few answers to commonly asked questions concerning this vaccine: 1. The flu vaccine does not cause the flu .  It takes your immune system two weeks post vaccine to be able to adequately protect itself from the flu so it is very possible that you were exposed to the virus before getting the shot. 2. After any vaccine you may experience muscle soreness at the site of the injection, headache, or a low grade fever (symptoms less severe than the real deal). 3. 1. And so it begins...

Life is full of unforeseen trials. This is a fact that most people are all too familiar with.  I never thought that I was invincible.  I could be one car wreck away from an admission to the ICU or perhaps at the wrong place at the wrong time prior to my demise, but I never pictured a diagnosis of breast cancer at age 28.  At first I conjectured that the amount of aspartame and Splenda I've guzzled throughout the years was to blame *shoulder shrug.* No one in my immediate family has a history of breast cancer.  Did you know that one in eight women are diagnosed with this awful disease in their lifetime?
